Heartbreak for Harwich as win is not enough.

Harwich 1st XI travelled to relegated Brightlingsea knowing a win would not guarantee them survival but would give them a great chance of doing so. Harwich bowled first on a very green pitch against a Brightlingsea side ravaged by unavailabilities. Batting early on looked tough as Garner and Rudkin bowled tight lines. Opener Cracknell looked the best bat on show as he kept the score ticking but regular wickets fell. An expensive over from King saw Cracknell push his score to 41 before falling to Stuart Barwood, one of his 4 victims. Brightlingsea eventually were all out on 87 with Barwood returning season best figures of 4-26. Semple finished with 3-27 meaning he took a whopping 42 wickets throughout the year. Mention also to Simon Garner who again bowled really well taking 16 wickets all season for a meer 18 runs per wicket.
Harwich started their reply cautiously but good batting first from this years top runs scorer Dan Goff (391 runs) and the resurgent Mark Barwood. Two hammer blows from Rudkin eventually saw Harwich pass 87 with 4 wickets down and gaining the full 20 points. Gould from Brightlingsea bowled very well only going for 10 off 8 overs and deserved more than his 2 wickets.
So with the win Harwich travelled home waiting for the news from Ipswich and East Suffolk who now needed 18 points to survive against promotion chasing Copdock. Sadly for Harwich Ipswich pulled off the victory and gained a full 20 points to leave Harwich relegated. Having won their last 4 games it was still not enough and they must rue the poor form throughout the middle of the season. Even more gut wrenching was they were only 6 points away from mid-table! With such high hopes in April they must now pick themselves up, regroup and look to bounce back from Division 6 on their first attempt. With such an end to the season they proved they can easily win at Division 5 level, however they must not take Division 6 too lightly, knuckle down and make sure the 60th anniversary of the club next year is marked with a Championship winning side.

The skipper Lee Davis would like to thank all who came and supported us throughout the season and for the Harwich Standard for printing all our reports.
