1st XI vs CopdockHarwich slip to first defeat.
Harwich travelled to second placed Copdock, who were also undefeated, with 5 frontline bowlers missing, knowing a decent run total was needed to come away with victory. Harwich lost the toss and were put into bat. Young openers Bilton and J.Goff started well and moved the score to 46 before J.Goff was caught trying to push the run-rate up for 16, Bilton soon followed having made a very cultured 31. Normally the Harwich middle-order would have taken this score on further but messrs Barwood, Eaton, D.Goff and Moors were soon all back in the clubhouse with the score on 81-6. Alan Double, aided by skipper Davis managed to chip away at the Copdock bowling, Double being extremely active through the off-side, before finally succumbing trying to increase the run-rate for 23. The experienced Semple was soon finding the boundary also but, with few overs remaining, got out trying to force the pace for a quick fire 18. Davis went next ball for 17 leaving young 15 year-old debutant Damien Smith facing a hat-trick ball first up, which he saw off well. However Harwich added one more to reach 136 all out.
Harwich needed early wickets and Smith opening the bowling in his first game bowled well but could not find that wicket taking ball. With Semple doing what he does best at the other end the run-rate was always slow but the Copdock batsmen never gave any real chances. Semple eventually prized two scalps before Copdock reached their required target with 2 wickets down and 9 overs remaining. Harwich now slip to 4th and, with players returning next week, know that they must win at home to Little Bardfield to keep their promotion chase on track.
