2nd XI vs Halstead 3rd XI 26/5/07

TWO COUNTIES DIVISION 7

HALSTEAD III V HARWICH & DOVERCOURT II

HALSTEAD WON BY THREE WICKETS

Harwich seconds travelled to Halstead under leaden skies and returned home under an even darker one, after helping themselves to defeat from the jaws of victory.

Deciding to bat first, Harwich got off to a good start in the burly shape of John Lawrence, carrying on last weeks’ form to bludgeon a rapid 44. With the first wicket falling on 66, this led to a mini collapse to leave Harwich on 93 for 6.

Thankfully for Harwich, Vice Captain Paul Brown and rising starlet Shaun Fox halted the Halstead charge, and were soon on top. With Browns’ versatility and Fox’s’ crisp driving, they went on to post an unbeaten record 7th wicket partnership for this division of 137, scoring 50 and 70 respectively. This also posted a competitive total of 230 for 6 at stumps.

Harwich got early reward with Shaun Fox bowling opener Coleman, but a couple of fifty run partnerships ensued, which kept pace with the run rate. A slowing of the bowling was required and veterans Lawrence and Lovett put the brakes on, with Lawrence claiming two wickets into the bargain.

Whilst opener Dicker remained, Halstead always stood a chance on the small ground. He began to find his range against the slow bowlers, so Harwich turned back to the young pace bowlers in the descending gloom.

With Halstead chasing down a rate of 10 and over, they needed 8 runs from the final delivery, and what followed was farcical in the extraordinary. A massive leg side wide was sent down resulting in 5 runs. Then another wide, 1 run, then the icing on the cake was a comical 2 byes with Harwich attempting a run out.

This left Harwich to contemplate next week’s fixture, which is at home to Long Melford on the Low Road, 2pm start. Come and watch the comedy of errors.
