3rd XI vs Copdock & OI 3rd XI 03/6/07TWO COUNTIES DIVISION C
HARWICH & DOVERCOURT III V COPDOCK & OI III
COPDOCK WON BY FOUR RUNS
Harwich lost the toss and were asked to field by the Copdock captain, but this was not too disheartening, as the home side had a strong looking bowling attack.
The visitors found runs off the bat hard to come by in the first ten overs, but the pressure was lifted by numerous extras being given away by the Harwich bowlers.
Cherry was keeping a steady ship at one end, while Harvey was starting to look dangerous at the other, before the latter was bowled by Lee Jackson for a well made 33.
This brought Bigton to the crease and he started putting the ball in all parts of the ground, until a powerful straight drive was superbly caught at short extra cover by Aaron Trussler, off the bowling of Danny Goff.
Copdock captain Jones followed a few balls later, when Jackson removed his middle stump to pick up his second wicket. Barron was next in with the sole intention of pinch hitting, but after a six and a couple of fours, he was bowled middle and off by young Tommy Armstrong.
Armstrong then made the important breakthrough of removing opener Cherry for 37, largely due to an excellent stumping by Sam Felgate, who was making just his third appearance.
Armstrong continued to probe away from the beach hut end and in quick succession accounted for Smith, Crane and Owen, all for ducks. This brought up a career first, five wicket haul for the young spinner.
Harwich skipper Goff then opted for spin at both ends, bringing on old head Andy Carmichael in an attempt to remove the big hitting Catchpole, which he achieved in his fourth over after a superb stooping catch from Simon Bourne at mid-on.
Carmichael finished the tail off in his next over when he removed the middle stump of wicket keeper Birch, and Copdock finished with a total of 160. Tommy Armstrong finished with figures of 5-20.
Harwich were confident of chasing down the total and got off to a flying start with Jackson belting the ball to all parts. With steady support from Trussler at the other end, Jackson reached his fifty within the first ten overs.
However, Copdock made an early bowling change and brought on the extremely slow paced Boulter, who had Jackson stumped in his third over. Goff then came to the crease, but was soon without his partner, Trussler, who was adjudged LBW for just 18.
The home side were still looking good for the win on 104-2, but a collapse ensued, as Boulter’s dolly drops were foreign to much of the young Harwich line up and they struggled for solutions.
After most of the Harwich middle to lower order batsmen failed to reach double figures, they found themselves nine down, with 27 still required. Smith and Carmichael made a valiant attempt to see Harwich home, but fell just four runs short of the target when Smith miss timed one to cover. Boulter finished with remarkable figures of 8-70 and this defeat leaves Harwich perilously close to the bottom of the table.
This Sunday, Harwich entertain Maldon at Low Road, 2pm start.
