Harwich 2nd XI vs Abberton 2nd XI 19th May

TWO COUNTIES DIVISION 7

HARWICH & DOVERCOURT V ABBERTON

HARWICH WON BY 3 WICKETS

The Harwich second string lined up against an Abberton side sitting just one place above them in the table, and were asked to bowl on a wicket which looked surprisingly good, despite the poor weather leading up to the weekend.

The away side got off to a slow start and were punished early on, when Shaun Fox removed both openers to leave the score at 21-2. This brought Brey to the crease, who began to steadily build an innings, as Harwich were conceding far too many extras.

The batting side were put under pressure during the middle part of the innings, largely due to a tight line being bowled by Aaron Rudkin, together with the immense swing being achieved at the other end by Harwich skipper Ray Lovett.

Brey went on to make a battling 73, having survived a few scares and being dropped a couple of times. Decent support was received from Brown, Lingard and Scott, and Abberton went on to make a respectable 195-7, which from a Harwich point of view, was probably thirty runs above what it should have been.

The reply from the Home side got off to a flying start, with openers Lovett and Lawrence despatching the ball to all parts. The runs were flowing and Abberton were looking short of ideas, when Lovett decided to go aerial, and he was caught on the boundary for a well made 33.

Lawrence continued taking the game to the visitors, and was well supported by Poole and Rudkin, and Harwich were looking comfortable for the victory. However, Whitfield and Scott had other ideas, and Lawrence was bowled for an excellent 72.

Harwich then started to lose wickets regularly, but reached the target with just under three overs to spare and won the game with a total of 196-7. This win sees Harwich leapfrog Abberton into third place.

This Saturday, Harwich Seconds travel to Halstead, 2pm Start.
