harwich 2s vs melford 2s

Harwich and Dovercourt 2nd XI vs Long Melford 2nd XI Div 7 Two Counties

Date: 2nd June 2007

Result: Harwich Won by 49 runs

Toss: Won by Harwich who elected to bat

Harwich and Dovercourt 2nd XI welcomed Long Melford 2nds down to Low road on this fine Saturday afternoon. Things went Harwich's way from the off, with Skipper Lovett winning the toss and not thinking twice as to puttting Melford into the field. Openers Lawrence and Barwood started off with intent early doors, but the latter was soon to be removed for a measly 12. This brought the in form Poole to the crease, with Lawrence scoring freely in his usual fashion and Poole helping him along the boundaries started to flow until Lawrence was caught behind for a fine 42. Moors then joined Poole at the crease but was then removed for just 20. Neale was next to join in the pavillion for no score, Poole at this point was marooned out in the middle by himself to steady the ship. Next to go was Brown for just 15 after almost bringing up the 50 partnership with the now much settled Poole. Harwich were unable to build lengthy partnerships as Melford's T.Bigg bagged himself 3 wickets. Rudkin was then dismissed for just 8, as Harwich left Poole stranded again. Enter Richard Bushell, the game turned on a knife edge as Melfords fortunes changed from taking regular wickets, to regular taxis to fetch the ball from all parts of the boundary as Bushell blasted 38 not out containing 4 6's. Poole meanwhile was not going to let Bushell steal the show and continued to hit regular boundaries himself easing past his half century to carry his bat on 82. Harwich ended on 226 for 6.

Out came Melford knowing that 227 was the required score in which to gain victory. Skipper Lovett threw the ball to Rudkin and D.Smith to try and gain the upper hand early on. With the score on just 27 Rudkin got the breakthrough trapping opener Wright for just 3. Meanwhile, Stewart showed a fine display of back foot shots on the slow Harwich wicket, pulling with ease and certainly punishing the loose deliveries from both opening Harwich bowlers. Shortly after Wrights dismissal Young Smith removed "the method man" Cole for just 2. Lovett then brought himself on to show a fine display of swing bowling having to aim down the leg side in order to avoid bowling persistant wides. Spinner Barwood then came on to help slow things down and with the first delivery of his spell removed Skeggs for just 9, this brought Martin to the crease who started to push the run chase along with help from the Opener Stewart, who eventually scooped one up to Bushell off the experienced Lovett for a fine 42. Barwood and Lovett both grabbed two a piece towards the end of the innings, with Smith running out Bigg for just 12 to show just how much this young talent has improved in the last 12 months. Martin 43 not out and M.Bigg 1 not out could not manage the 227 required but fell short on 177 for 7.
