Harwich vs Ipswich and ES 2nds

Harwich end losing streak with emphatic victory.

Harwich entertained relegation rivals Ipswich and East Suffolk and came away with their first victory in 10 attempts. For the first time since late April the Low Road pitch resembled a batsmen's paradise, so it came as a surprise when the opposition chose to put Harwich into bat. Captain Davis and his Vice young Dan Goff led from the front and, after a watchful start against the new ball, started to make some decent in roads into the ipswich attack. After 15 overs Harwich had posted 64 without loss, actually higher than an entire innings earlier on in the season! Davis was the first to fall after quick work from the wicket keeper for a steady 26. At the other end young Goff was playing some masterful strokes finding the boundary on numerous occasions. Without good support firstly from Poole (13) and then the in-form King (39) he went on to score a superb 89 but will be kicking himself for not making his second century of the season. A mini collapse ensued but Stuart Barwood and the experienced Semple re-built before falling for 27 and 17 respectively. A quickfire 12* including a straight six from the talented youngster Damien Smith saw Harwich to a very strong 245-8. Harwich knew the key to winning was removing the opener Howlett and this was even more true as he raced to 35 out of only 46. It was this seasons big find Simon Garner who won the battle between the two though as a superb yorker saw Howlett returning to the pavillion, and Ipswich's chances for victory going with him. Controlled bowling from Semple 3-38, an excellent spell form Garner 4-39 and a quick fire 3-13 from King saw Ipswich fall for 94. A mention must go to Poole who took an extremely good catch in the gully off Garner earlier in the innings. This moves Harwich off the bottom of the league and keeps their hopes of survival alive. However 3 victories are still needed and they travel to Long Melford next week with renewed confidence looking for the first of those victories.
