Harwich win again after mystery hoax.
Harwich entertained Ipswich in their final home game of the season but so nearly suffered a nightmare scenario when a mystery hoax call on the friday told them their opponents had conceded. The call on the Friday meant Harwich skipper Lee Davis had told all his players the game was off. Luckily, only by chance, the opposition saw the league website that night and rang to say they could play and that the earlier call must have been a prank. Had Harwich not turned up the game would have been void and Harwich relegated! However the side was recalled and at full strength and saw Harwich to their third win on the spin.
Having won the toss and elected to bowl they claimed two early wickets through Garner and Rudkin. The ball was moving around alot early on and hard to control but Harwich's new opening attack stuck to good line and length meaning runs were hard to come by. The introduction of Semple kept this going and he soon found a wicket to keep Ipswich pinned down. Stuart Barwood was brought into the attacke and bowled a super spell of bowling to finish with 3-26 off 9. Semple returning figures of 2-40 off 16 meant Ipswich left Harwich 150 to claim 18 points. Church hit 42 Not Out for the opposition who at one stage looked like scoring nearer 100 than 150. Harwich went out with confidence and the young partnership of Goff and Stuart Barwood held firm. Stuart went first to a stunning catch for 14 before Goff went for 20. The experienced Poole played well for 29 and Mark Barwood chipped in with 15. It was the innings of Bushell that stood out, with 50 still needed and 5 wickets left Harwich could have collapsed but his 34, well supported by Moors, was extremely well played and it was a shame to see him eventually fall when the scores were tied. Rudkin hit a 4 off his first ball to secure victory which now leaves Harwich just 1 point away from safety. They travel to bottom club Brightlingsea next week looking for that 4th victory on the trot. If they can achieve this Ipswich and East Suffolk would need 18 points or more at promotion chasing Copdock to secure their own safety. If they cannot Harwich would rescue Division 5 status from the jaws of relegation.
