The thing is I could get an overseas player every year Stu, via Keith or Dot But...
The club, I know wont pay for one out of their own pockets.
Where would they stay ?
Who provides them with work ?
An arguement by certain members is that why should I give up my time to pay someone ?
Which I can their point on that.
So I guess as a suggestion, if we feel that it would benefit us (and it doesnt take a genuis to work out it would)
We have 'special fundraisers' for this purpose.
What the club dont realise is that (and I think most people dont) is that it cost me a lot of money & time too have Keith and Dot here for summer in 2002.....
Its a big commitment.
But yes I would love an overseas player every year.

its not that we dont need 1 its just were not in a postion 2 get 1 for starters nd at this level we dont need 1 we just need 2 work as a team and as the years go by nd we get into top 4 or 3 then we think bout it as it 2 much money. nd as browney said were will he saty nd were will he work.

No! I don't think an overseas player is the answer. Maybe it is in the short term, if all you want to do is get promoted, but it's not goig to improve the long term future of the club. Tell me, what decent overseas cricketer is going to want to come and play div 5 at harwich?? you'll probably end up with someone who is just over here for the dollars and couldn't give a toss about anything else.
So you get promoted, so you have to keep getting an overseas player in until you get someone who joins/comes up throuh the ranks who is equally good if not better.
I think we'd be silly to consider it!! As browny siad, a lot of hard work goes into getting an overseas player and money for that matter. Money that would be better invested elsewhere.
I really cannot see the sense in an overseas player in div5.
We'll see how stowmarket do next year, if they don't get 1 for next year.

Agree I dont think its a sound investment for a Div 5 side...
Would they better our side yes, would they help the youngsters yes...
But as you say its a short term fix to a long term problem.
I have to say it wouldn't be worth the money in our position at the moment.
If you think airfare would be £500 + alone.
We will always have the option in years to come of finding an overseas player easy enough with Keith and Dot being able to get somebody for us no problems.
Thats not to say I wouldn't like an overseas player every year....
But its pros and cons...

i think an overseas player would be good for the club. i understand that there are alot of pros nd cons but if we could get past the serious part of the money and a place to stay then we should go for it.
we have the talent in the club to score runs but we are not taking alot of wickets so a good bowler would be a must. also having a player of thats standed as a coach aswel would be great for the youths and older player in the club to.

jus annoys me that ppl say we r up agaisnt rubbish players etc slow bowlers. well unless we get ourselves out of this standard we wont eva face decent opposition and i dont think we will get out of this standard without one................sorry!

as aaron says pro's and con's to be honest, its not as if the club is flush with cash atm, so an overseas player would be very expensive and commitment from certain players to keep him/them housed,
however, i feel that it would bring a boost to the team and make people spark on certain occasions, it would also give us a extra option to the side if he bats or bowls,
the colts could be trained by him and there for getting experience from not only our coaches but other coaches, but would this be more worth while getting the coach that hopper and the other subject is talking about??????

In my opinion its an interesting debate.
Lets look at the actual figures -
£600 Flight
£15 per coaching session
Accommodation per week £35-£50 (unless somebody will put them up for free - I doubt that)
Someone needs to find them a local job
This is for 5 months...
Im definitely not saying they wouldn't benefit our club, but I agree with Jacko on this one in Div 5 its a bit wasteful.
I think that type of money could be better spent on pro coaching for our best young players, and then when we reach a certain level, maybe Div 3 then I would yes get an overseas player.
I would also like more members of the club (or Senior members) offering their own time to help our better players in one on one sessions.
Just pointers, not official techique coaching.
I do also think an overseas player brings a certain something extra for everyone at a cricket club.

Stu,
I disagree with you on saying that you cant get out of Div 5 without an overseas player, we are close this season to doing it !!!!
Hahahaha... that was a joke btw !
Anyhow, heres a thought on why we cant get out of Div 5.
"You only get out what you put in"
And if poeple are not prepared to put in the effort to get better, than we certainly could be stagnated for a while.

Stuey, if you think getting an overseas player is going to give you automatic promotion, then you are very much deluded my friend.
One player doesn't make a team.
There are far more important things that need adressing before we even think about an overseas player.
I for one would vote against it. I mean, if we have to rely on some aussie or s african who doesn't know or care a jot for our club, then i think we should give up now.

I think we are all saying that its something not to be fogotten but at this time not a priority....

look we are good enough i have seen it seconded game of the season away to wivenho we were chasing 240 or sumthing like that and we chased that total down as a team same with the first game we got 250 odd everyone played well and we got them out for 130 or 140 odd my point is there is not enough commitment that team that played the first game have not all played together since and same with the seconded game if we put as much effort on to the field as we do on this we wouldnt be in this league so come on lets get back on track we can do this!!!

i thought id put a debate etc to try and get thoughts. im not sayin one makes a team, jacko u posted lets c how stowmarket do without their overseas player next yr, dont care how they do but playin a higher standard than us! meanwhile wen ppl dont practise promotion is a no hope! sorry but facts r facts,
clearly no one cares what league we are in or they wud be practising.......or making themselves available instead of slating people who turn up and give 99/100%
we have bowlers who have never ever turned up at nets.........................YER AND TO HEAR PPL SAY, BOWLING IS NOT AN ISSUE! WELL THINK AGAIN.
wen did we last bowl a team all out?
