Sunday 27th May 2008 3rds vs Ipswich AWAYHarwich went into this fixture knowing their opponents would be on a high after their resounding win over Mistley last week and were put into bat after losing the toss.
The away side remained confident of posting a good total and got off to an excellent start with openers Danny Goff and Stuey Barwood putting on 86 for the first wicket. The partnership was eventually broken when Goff was given out LBW off the bowling of Porter.
With support from Sam Trussler, Barwood continued the onslaught and went on to make a well structured 75, before being stumped by Neil Manning. After losing the unfortunate Eaton cheaply, Mark Barwood entered the crease and posted a quick fire half century until he was bowled by Plumb.
Sam Trussler fell just two runs short of his half century, but still added a very respectable 48 and help take the total past 200. The Harwich lower order put together some excellent running between the wickets and went on to post a total of 284-8. The pick of the Ipswich bowlers was Plumb with 3-37.
With a formidable total to chase, the home side tried to make a game of it with Gooding hitting a couple of fours in the first over. However, Gooding’s stay at the crease was short lived, as two overs later, Ray Lovett hit the top of his off stump with a beauty.
At the other end, Aaron Rudkin was keeping also things tight and picked up the wickets of Funnell and Elford. With Danny Goff and Stuey Barwood brought into the attack, wickets continued to fall and Ipswich found themselves struggling on 78-2. The main resistance had been through Cullen, but he was eventually dismissed for a battling 21. Home captain Will Gunson then came to the crease and frustrated the Harwich attack in search of maximum points.
Gunson was eventually stumped for a top score of 30 off the bowling of Harwich captain Andy Carmichael. The away side tried desperately to finish off the Ipswich line up, but were unable to and the score finished on 129-9, giving Harwich a victory by 155 runs.
This Sunday, Harwich travel to local rivals Mistley, 2pm start.
