HARWICH WIN TOURNAMENT WITH SIXY DISPLAY
On Saturday 19th April, Mistley Cricket Club hosted their annual 6-a-side tournament. With the conditions resembling something of Low Road, it was no surprise to hear teams calling off due to the poor weather but this did not stop Mistley, Harwich, Ipswich and East Suffolk, Brightlingsea and The Possibles enjoying a very well run day.
Firstly Harwich Captain Goff won his first and hopefully not last toss of the season and elected to bat, thus putting Brightlingsea into the field. Harwich could not have asked for a worse start with Barwood being run out without facing. Enter Trussler (25 retired) who combined with Goff (13 n/o) saw the total get to a very respectful 62 after the allocated 5 overs.
Harwich then took to the field, knowing that anything less than 13 an over was good enough for victory. With an action packed first over containing nothing less than 1 wicket and 2 run outs Harwich were almost guaranteed winners. Tight bowling from Goff, Newell and Neale secured victory with Brightlingsea 20 runs short of the total despite lee davis' best attempts to make it closer.
Harwich’s next opponents were The Possibles, yet again Goff won the toss and elected to bat first, Captain Goff soon finding himself back in the clubhouse after a quickfire 25 sensed yet another Harwich victory as Trussler soon joined him for the same score. Newell entered the crease to continue the punishment before carrying his bat for the 2nd time.
The Possibles then began the run chase but with their inform batsman being starved of the strike the entire innings. The Possibles fell short of the total after tight bowling and some great glove work from Trussler claiming two of his 4 victims in this game alone. Neale held his nerve in the final over to see Harwich home.
Enter the Mistley show…Harwich found themselves 2 wins from 2 games, knowing their next two games were not going to be easy. Mistley contained Harwich to a measly total of 39 due to Mistley bowling to their field tremendously. Trussler again providing the back bone of the Harwich innings. The hosts soon found themselves back in the clubhouse and out of the cold after a well earnt victory showing their class by disposing of the Harwich attack which caused their previous opponents much trouble.
Harwich found themselves going into the last game knowing only a win gave them any chance of winning the tournament. Surprise surprise Goff won the toss and elected to field for the first time in the campaign and what a great decision this turned out to be. Ipswich began the innings at quite a rate, and with Harwich taking a couple of wickets along the way kept themselves in the game restricting Ipswich to 59. How important those wickets turned out to be. Harwich began the run chase, Goff fell early caught behind. Enter Trussler (20) who combined with Barwood (25) put on a match winning display with various boundaries securing Harwich to scores tied before Neale came in to score the winning runs.
Harwich came out eventual winners, despite Harwich, Mistley and Ipswich all being on 6pts having played 3 lost 1. Harwich took the title of Champions due to taking the most wickets throughout the day. Ipswich having gained 7, Mistley 11 and Harwich 12.
